Story

A Remarkable Journey

Mary Schellenberg

It is with profound sadness that we share that Mary (Channon) Schellenberg passed away on July 24 2025.

Mary was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1953 to Richard and Janet Channon who loved their family dearly. Mary grew up with her siblings in the house her parents built on Ste. Marie Road, and attended school at Macdonald Elementary and High School. She loved spending time with her family and cousins at the cottage at Lac Brule, QC.

Mary allowed new adventures to move her westward until she arrived in Winnipeg. Here Mary started a family of her own, and her children meant the world to her.

She loved to spend her summers in flip-flops, getting in lots of sunshine. After her children had left home, Mary and her sister Margaret would take annual road trips where they would travel all across Canada, camping and hiking all over - rain, snow, or shine. They would often stop at gift shops and museums along the way, and Mary always had room in her suitcase to bring back gifts for her children.

Having worked for North American Fur Auctions for decades, and later for Fur Harvesters Auction, Mary will always be remembered for her contribution to the Trapping and Fur Trading community, and for her witty sense of humour. Mary made so many friends and loved to talk about how much fun they would have at trapping conventions across the country.

We couldn't have asked for a better sister, mother and grandmother, and will miss her every day. Mary's memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.

Mary was predeceased by her parents Richard Channon and Janet (Neilson) Channon, and is survived by her children, Curtis (Lindsey), Erin, Sarah Schellenberg, Caleb (Danielle); her granddaughter Lemmy; her brothers Peter (Lynn), Michael, her sister and best friend Margaret.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the staff at the Health Sciences Centre Womens Hospital during Mary's last days.

A celebration of life will take place on December 6, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ovarian Cancer Canada (ovariancanada.org).

MARY SCHELLENBERG'S JOURNEY

Remembering...

Shirlee

A beautiful tribute to an amazing woman. My heartfelt condolences to her beloved family. . Its rare one gets to share 60 years of friendship, which is when ours began. Mare and I met in Grade 8 at Macdonald High School where we quickly bonded and began our many years of adventures, hopes and dreams. . My heart is hurting for her beloved family; for Mike, Peter and her dear sister Maggie, and for myself …rest easy beautiful Mare, your time here is done…

Everyone that met Mary for the first time was met with the feeling that they had just met a lifetime friend. I was involved with helping with a trappers rendezvous for the first time and needed some help. Mary offered above and beyond support and helped calm the storm when I wasn't sure. Mary helped everyone and was a true friend. RIP my friend.

Dear Curtis, Lindsey, Erin, Dan, Sarah, Caleb and Lemmy; Peter, Lynn, Michael and Maggie - I cannot imagine how sad you all must feel. I feel Mary's loss deeply. She was a wonderful friend to me as we grew up and were able to visit quite often via our parents. And of course, there were letters and cards back in that day. She always inspired me and her grace and humour was always there, right from the time she was Smallest Cousin in Tout le Gang of Brule Cousins. From Smallest Cousin to Biggest Place in all our hearts.
